The Afrikaans Magazine Baba en Kleuter recently ran a story about the best ways the develop bilingualism in young children, which included extracts from an extended interview with an expert, the director of UPSET, Susan Coetzee-Van Rooy. Read the story here, and if you don’t follow the Afrikaans, I’m sure you can get the gist with google translate, or else ask a professional through CTrans to translate it for you.

“Cognitive Sociolinguistics, Cultural Conceptualisations and World Englishes”

 Presenter:        Dr. Arne Peters

University of Potsdam, Germany

 Aim:

Dr Peters will present an outline of the fields of Cognitive Sociolinguistics and Cultural Conceptualisations and discuss some of his latest work.  The presentation and discussion would provide a valuable introduction to these topics for potential future research.

Other key concepts addressed:

Cultural cognition, cultural schemas, conceptual metaphors, Hong Kong English, Irish English, Aboriginal English, South African English
