Gustav Butler (Director)
Gustav Butler works in the Applied Language Studies sub-programme, one of the two sub-programmes within UPSET. His main research interests include the design of Academic Literacy interventions and determining the impact of such interventions on student success. In a connected interest, he is currently involved in a project that investigates the Academic Literacy levels of students in languages other than English and Afrikaans, with specific reference to two other official South African languages, Sesotho and isiZulu. At this point, the project mainly involves the translation of the Test of Academic Literacy Levels (TALL) into Sesotho and isiZulu in order to determine student readiness for additional learning support in such languages. He further focuses on the development of academic writing, with specific reference to the writing difficulties experienced by post-graduate writers.
